The motion to proceed with a vote John Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act failed to pass the Senate on a 50-49 vote. Despite a majority of the Senate -- and a majority of Americans -- supporting this bill that would strengthen voting rights, a minority of Senators are standing in the way. Senators in support of federal voting rights legislation have multiple options for overcoming the filibuster rule; now they must choose an option and pass the bill.
Voters of color continue to be impacted by discriminatory election practices intended to diminish their voting power. In 2021, we witnessed even more attempts to disenfranchise Black and Brown voters through attacks on vote by mail, cuts to early voting periods, and unnecessary identification requirements. This highlights the need for Congress to act urgently.
The John Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act is a crucial step in protecting and strengthening our democracy. We call on the Senate to take steps to pass it.
