ACLU Athlete Ally National Center for Transgender Equality

Dear President/Chancellor,

We, the undersigned urge you and the NCAA Board of Governors to hold a vote in accordance with your values of diversity and inclusion and move the 2021 NCAA championships out of Idaho at your next meeting in October.

Transgender people are under attack, yet again. In late March, amidst a global pandemic, Idaho enacted House Bill (HB) 500, which discriminates against transgender athletes by barring them from participating in athletic competitions consistent with their gender identity, and subjects all female athletes to the possibility of invasive genital and genetic screenings. Idaho’s law is so egregious that a judge intervened to prevent its enforcement.

As a member of the Board of Governors, you have tremendous power to ensure the NCAA sets the standard for providing a safe and inclusive environment for all athletes. The NCAA already issued a statement calling out HB500 as discriminatory and, in 2016, promised to ensure all championships would be held in a discrimination-free enviornment.

Alongside 500+ NCAA student-athletes, women's and civil rights groups, and professional athletes, we call on you and the rest of the Board of Governors to ensure that the NCAA uphold its core value of nondiscrimination by immediately relocating the 2021 NCAA Championships from Idaho.

Signed,
