Net Neutrality was the foundation of a free and open internet for all. It is well past time you began the process of restoring Net Neutrality by filling the existing swing-vote vacancy on the FCC. End the delay. Nominate a pro-Net Neutrality FCC Commissioner now!Four years ago, if you went on the internet to visit a website, watch a video, or listen to a podcast, the rules governing the internet guaranteed your access to that content could not be blocked or slowed down by your internet service provider (ISP) because it disapproves of the content for business or political reasons. Those freedom-preserving rules, which are known as Net Neutrality, were abandoned by a Trump-appointee dominated FCC on December 14, 2017. The free and open internet that we had come to rely on in 21st Century America was gone. With President Biden in office, we now have a chance to restore net neutrality. But, the window of opportunity is closing fast.
In July, as part of an extensive executive order covering a range of technology related issues, President Biden wrote that he “encourages the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) to restore Net Neutrality rules undone by the prior administration.” But, without a fifth commissioner, that process remains stalled.
Having an internet that is free from corporate policing and censorship is appointing a new FCC commissioner who can cast the deciding vote to restore Net Neutrality should be top priority for President Biden. Unfortunately, the American public is still waiting for President Biden to nominate a fifth, tie-breaking FCC commissioner, which would fill the existing swing-vote vacancy and begin the important process of restoring net neutrality. Until he does, and until his appointee is confirmed, the internet will remain subject to corporate censorship and manipulation.
The FCC has an open seat. It needs to be filled with a pro-Net Neutrality commissioner now. The future of Net Neutrality depends on it.
