Since the nation’s founding, the fabric of American society has been deeply stained by racial inequalities, and attitudes and ideologies harmful to Black and Indigenous people of color.

The past year has again brought the racism that has plagued this nation for centuries to light: Black Americans have endured violence and loss of life at the hands of the state, while disproportionately bearing the economic and health risk burdens of COVID-19.

This is the legacy of systemic racism in America. And we must end it.

Systemic Equality is the ACLU’s racial justice agenda that seeks to address America’s legacy of racism and oppression through legislative and administrative campaigns, as well as electoral work.

The Systemic Equality agenda includes specific policy asks of the Biden-Harris administration and Congress that will advance societal equity for and empower the civic participation of Black and Indigenous people of color, close the racial wealth gap, and seek reconciliation for our racist past. Current elements of the agenda include:

The agenda will utilize all levers of government to ensure that ALL people living in America, no matter their race, gender identity, disability, religion, or creed have equal access to our country’s promises of TRUE life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness.

And we need you to make this agenda a reality - sign the pledge to take further action to build a nation where every person can achieve their highest potential, unhampered by structural and institutional racism.
