Imagine losing your license because you can’t afford to pay your court fees. Every year, the state of Montana suspends thousands of driver’s licenses for failure to pay court fees, trapping Montana residents in a vicious cycle of debt, poverty, and incarceration.

Without a license, getting to work is much harder for some people and they can risk losing their job -- if they lose their jobs, they can’t pay their fees.

But this can change right now. Montana legislators are considering a bill that would take away the state’s ability to suspend driver’s licenses for unpaid fees. We can end this two-tiered system of justice that penalizes poverty by calling on our legislators to pass this important legislation.

Access to a valid driver’s license is essential in Montana to drive to and from work, school or daycare, job interviews, medical appointments, the grocery store, or religious services. Blocking Montanans from accessing everyday necessities by suspending their licenses doesn’t make our roads safer. It’s time to end debt-based driver’s license suspensions.
